Coffee Talk: Are we ready to export coffee through Puerto Antioquia?

The strategic location of Puerto Antioquia in the Gulf of Urabá represents a disruptive logistical advantage by positioning itself as the Caribbean exit closest to the country's main coffee production centres, reducing the land routes from the centre of the country by an average of 350 km compared to the Cartagena alternative. The most beneficial departments will be Antioquia, the second largest producer of the grain with 138 thousand tons in 2024 (16% of the total national) and the Coffee Axis (Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío), which has 117 thousand tons (14% of the national production).

In terms of territorial efficiency, the new terminal results in 51% distance savings for Medellín, 41% for Manizales and 39% for Pereira. This connectivity is vital for the Coffee Axis, a region that not only has high crop technification, but also concentrates a significant part of the transformation infrastructure (Risaralda, Antioquia and Caldas), bringing together more than 37% of the country's trillators, allowing them a more efficient and competitive exit to the Atlantic in front of other ports of great importance for coffee-making activity such as Buenaventura or long routes to the traditional ports of the north.
